About
Rabikul Islam of Charia Maskanda village, Sadar union, Durgapur upazila, Netrokona, runs a farm of Sonali 'colour bird' chickens. Thirty years ago he made a living trading scrap; later he hawked silver-finish furniture door to door and also sold mobile phones in instalments. With Tk 3 lakh of his own and some loans he started the farm in March 2024, buying six decimals of land and building the shed on five. He began with 500 chicks and expanded to 1,500 birds. About 800 birds once died within three or four days, but he started again; the second and third batches recovered part of the loss, and in May 2025 he was marketing his fifth batch. His school-going son Shahinur Alam works on the farm alongside his studies. The upazila livestock officer says many buyers who avoid broilers like this breed, which looks and tastes much like local chicken.
