About
Rafiqul Islam (born 1970) of Krishnapur village in Kabilpur union, Pirgonj upazila of Rangpur, once had no land beyond his homestead and lived by day labour. In 2014 farmer Saiful Islam of Ranipukur in Mithapukur gave him some bitter gourd seeds; he planted them around his 7-decimal homestead, harvested in 60 days and sold them for Tk 5,800. The next year he sharecropped 20 more decimals and sold the bitter gourd from 27 decimals for Tk 18,000, then began growing pointed gourd, cucumber and bottle gourd too. He has since bought 18 decimals of land and built a tin-roofed house; his two sons also grow vegetables and his wife Rashida Begum helps. This season he has 50 decimals of bitter gourd, 20 of cucumber and 10 of pointed gourd, has already sold Tk 70,000 worth and has more than Tk 1.5 lakh worth still in the fields. Following his lead, 95 percent of the village now grows vegetables commercially all year, sent to Dhaka and other districts; he is a guide to many vegetable farmers in the area.
