About
To add to the household income, Rashida Begum (45) of Mohisher Char in Panchkhola union, Madaripur Sadar, first planted a vegetable garden beside her house with bottle gourd, sweet pumpkin, data, cucumber and okra. Needing fertiliser, she trained at the district agriculture office and, about three years ago and with her husband's help, set up six cement rings for vermicompost in a tin-roofed shed beside the house; there are now nine. From the dung of her two cows, each ring gives a maund of compost in 25-30 days. She sells compost at Tk 600 a maund and worms at Tk 1,500 a kg; the district agriculture office and local people buy from her. From compost, worms, milk and vegetables she earns Tk 20,000-25,000 a month. She wants to enlarge the shed and add rings to multiply production, and neighbouring women are being inspired by her.
