About
Reshma and her husband Md. Mainuddin Bepari of North Ramjanpur, Ramjanpur union, Kalkini Upazila, Madaripur, had almost no land of their own. In 2004, seeing men and women working the fields together in Meherpur, Reshma decided to farm alongside her husband. They first sharecropped five decimals from a neighbour for snake gourd, spending Tk 22,000 and making Tk 35,000 profit; then a bigha of okra, snake gourd and local bitter gourd gave a bumper crop. Now on 11 bighas (4 their own, 7 sharecropped) they grow tomato, bottle gourd, cauliflower, cabbage, okra, watermelon, snake gourd, brinjal and other vegetables and seasonal fruit, with watermelon and bangi melon on the sandy soil around the farm. They also have two fish ponds. After all costs they earn over a lakh a month, and a three-storey brick house has replaced their tin hut. The upazila agriculture officer calls them trained vegetable growers and entrepreneurs whose example is helping nearby farmers prosper.
