About
Rezaul Karim Khandakar, a teacher at a private educational institution in Barlekha upazila, Moulvibazar, has built a fruit garden beside his home in the Officebazar area of Dakshin Shahbazpur union alongside his teaching. In 2017 he planted mango trees on a nearby hillock as a hobby; the good harvest drew him on, and he added orange, malta, guava, jamrul, pomegranate, dragon fruit, fig, strawberry and many more. Started on two acres, the garden now holds over a hundred local and foreign fruit varieties: 50 kinds of mango (Alphonso, American Kent, Himsagar, Haribhanga, Kiujai, Blackstone, Banana Mango and others), 10 kinds of orange and malta and 7 of grape, along with pomegranate, apple, persimmon, pear, rambutan, salak, cashew and more. Each tree is labelled with its name and variety, and the garden has become a local sight. This year he has grown grapes commercially on four decimals. The upazila agriculture officer called him an enterprising agri-entrepreneur and encouraged him to expand commercial fruit growing.
