About
Rajib Karmakar (32), a young entrepreneur from Pashuribunia village, Rangabali upazila, Patuakhali, started a small chicken farm at home to escape unemployment. Seeing a profit, he added fish and dairy cows step by step and built 'Ritika O Rudra Khamar Bari' on 60 decimals of family land. Broiler, Sonali and layer chickens live on bamboo-and-betelnut platforms over the middle of the pond, with pangas, shing and magur fish below, surrounded by betel nut, fruit and vegetable gardens. He also kept Sahiwal cattle but sold them for lack of space. He is a dealer for layer, broiler and Sonali chicks and fish feed as well. Farm manager Rahat Mia says the chickens go to unions across the upazila; eggs and birds are sold wholesale and retail, and the fish retail in local markets. Rajib says the farm makes Tk 2 lakh profit a month. On his advice many locals are taking up fish and poultry.
