Rose Garden

About

Rose Garden is Jalal Sikdar's plant nursery beside the Bhabanipur graveyard in Rajbari town. Jalal, from the Mechhoghata area of Rajbari Sadar, used to work as an office assistant at an NGO in Dhaka. In 2009 a colleague gave him a Tk 150 cactus bought at a fair in Dhaka; two years later he sold the plants that grew from it for Tk 35,000, and his love of plants began. In 2016 he leased four bighas at Gangaprasadpur village in Mizanpur union and grew malta, but seeing that people were more interested in plants than in fruit, he set up a nursery. He stocks many species, planned around what customers want, and according to Prothom Alo (July 2023) he now earns several lakh taka a month. Staff work at the nursery; they graft plants, go to customers' homes to work when needed, and give advice on making gardens. People come from Kalukhali and elsewhere to buy lemon and other saplings, and some take fruit-bearing lemon trees for their rooftop gardens.
