Shah Alam of Majail village (spelled Majair in the English report) in Polash union, Bishwambarpur, left school after class eight and, while jobless, began growing cucumber on 15 decimals of land in 2008. After making a profit he moved to tomato, cucumber and other vegetables on 60 decimals the following year. On the agriculture office's advice he leases land from neighbours and other village farmers for vegetables and seed production. The Department of Agricultural Extension built a poly-shade net house on 10 decimals at government cost, which he named 'S Alam Agro Farm'. Selling seedlings from mid-September, by 1 February 2025 he had sold at least 23 lakh: 4 lakh tomato, 2 lakh chilli, 14,000 papaya, 20,000 bottle gourd, 60,000 cauliflower and 60,000 aubergine seedlings. With that income he grows vegetables on 20 acres (60 bighas in the English report), where 40 workers are employed. A Sylhet-based agricultural development project honoured him as the district's best farmer, and a local UP member says 20–25 young men in the upazila have become self-reliant through vegetable farming after following his example.
