Farmer Saikul Islam (38) of Sehraund village in Kalmakanda upazila, Netrokona, grows green 'lawn carpet' grass commercially on fallow land; the upazila agriculture officer says it is the first such cultivation in Kalmakanda. He first saw the grass in March 2020 at a relative's home in Mohammadpur, Dhaka; out of work during Covid, he learned to grow it there, came home and started a trial on 12 decimals of fallow land with Tk 1.2 lakh of capital. It made a profit, so he leased more fallow land in the area; in 2024 he grew it on 70 decimals. Twelve local young men tend the grass for a daily wage of Tk 400–500 each. He sells the grass at Tk 80 per square foot; besides local hobbyists, many people come from far away to buy it for home and office yards and gardens. The grass takes about a year to be ready; after all costs he made about Tk 6 lakh profit the previous year. Many locals now take his advice to start growing it.
