About
Selim Uddin (54), a farmer in Dargah Para, Jhilongja union, Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila, used to grow vegetables. Seeing the high price of the foreign 'Black Baby' watermelon, in the first week of May he planted it for the first time on his own 33 decimals; with PKSF support and advice from IDF officers he had a crop within two months. Having spent about Tk 55,000, he had sold Tk 1.12 lakh of watermelons by 24 August, with Tk 20,000–30,000 more still in the field. He sells from the field at Tk 50–60 a kg; each melon weighs 2–3 kg. According to IDF, his was the district's first Black Baby crop. He planned to triple the area the next year, and nearby farmers have visited his field to learn the method.
