Shahinul Islam's Integrated Farm

Shahinul Islam (Bokul) of Moyenpur Purbapara village in Mithapukur upazila, Rangpur, started in 2006 as a class ten student with two ducks kept as a hobby; his flock later passed two thousand. He went on to raise six Sahiwal cattle, plant a Haribhanga mango orchard, and grow seed potatoes and fish; a pond leased for Tk 3 lakh earned him Tk 11-12 lakh in two years. After finishing at Begum Rokeya University he chose farming over a job. He now produces quail eggs and chicks and also has a local chicken farm; in 2024-25 he grew ginger in 16,000 sacks as a companion crop in his mango orchard. He won the Bangabandhu National Agriculture Award in 2016 for growing mangoes with light traps, perching and fruit bagging instead of pesticides. In 2012 he founded a farmers' group, the Moyenpur Agricultural Information and Communication Centre; he has given ginger sacks and seed to every household in the village and, through the horticulture centre, distributed saplings of several mango varieties to farmers.
