About
Near the Napitkhali bridge outside Nesarabad upazila town in Pirojpur, two educated brothers from the village, Shamim Ahmed and Sumon, have grown sunflowers on 30 decimals of their own land beside the road. A year earlier the land lay idle. Having studied to HSC and failed to find a job, Shamim turned to farming; on the agriculture office's advice, and with seed and fertiliser from it, he started growing sunflowers. Within three months the plants flowered and set seed. Having spent Tk 30,000, they hope for four maunds of oil, which they expect to bring Tk 80,000 to 1 lakh. As the first to grow sunflowers in that area, they have drawn interest from other farmers, who come to ask about the method and the profit.
