Shanto Karmakar, a blacksmith of Dainya village in Tangail Sadar Upazila, makes dao (machetes), bonti (floor blades), knives and cleavers, and sharpens old tools. He says they are usually made of spring iron or raw iron: spring-iron tools are better and cost more, raw-iron ones are cheaper. By his prices, a skinning knife is Tk 100-200, a dao Tk 150-350, a bonti Tk 200-400, a slaughtering knife Tk 300 and a cleaver Tk 500 to 1,300. Blacksmiths are busiest before Eid-ul-Azha, when work runs from morning to late at night.
