About
Helal Mia of Gandhigaon village beside the Garo Hills in Jhenaigati upazila, Sherpur, has raised local cattle on the hills for about 23 years. He now has 27 cattle, 12 of them calves. He lets them out onto the hills in the morning, where they graze natural grass and leaves all day and return before dusk; he gives only salt water and no other feed. He sells calves for Tk 40,000-50,000 and grown cattle for Tk 70,000-80,000. Cattle are his family's main source of income, which has brought the household comfort and pays for his children's schooling. Local farmers say hill-raised local cattle are in higher demand because their meat tastes better.
