Shipra Das, a homemaker in Maitrabandha mohalla of Bera municipality, Pabna, has run a clothing shop in a room of her own house for five years. She says the business, started about five years ago with around Tk 40,000 of capital, is now worth over Tk 4 lakh. The shop stocks saris, three-pieces, gowns, children's clothes and more; all customers are women, and men do not shop here. She runs the shop alongside her household work, and sales are good at Eid. Home-shop owners in the area say that with no shop rent or staff costs they can sell clothes for less than market shops.
