About
Shokher Murgiwala is Sajjadul Alam's fancy-chicken farm on College Road (College Para, Gabtali town) in Gabtali upazila, Bogura; it is the name of his Facebook page, and locals know him by it. A student of English at Government Azizul Haque College, he came home during Covid and, with Tk 1,000 from his mother, bought two six-week-old Silkie chicks through the Facebook group 'Bogura Business Care'; they began laying at six months, the eggs hatched, and that is how it started. The farm now has 15 rare foreign breeds — Silkie, Brahma, Cochin, Bantam, Frizzle, Phoenix, Yokohama, Onagadori, Fighter, Polish Cap, Sebright, Shamo, White Face, Rosecomb and Sumatra — worth about Tk 4 lakh in all. The birds live in a three-tier rack of wood and iron mesh, each breed in its own section. He recently bought three Malaysian Shamo birds for Tk 30,000 and is preparing to sell chicks hatched from their eggs. Through the Facebook page he sends birds and chicks to different parts of the country, and buyers also come from far away. He won a special prize at the Bogura Sadar Upazila Livestock Exhibition 2022 and second prize in the poultry category at the Gabtali Upazila Livestock Exhibition.
