Narandia in Kalihati Upazila, Tangail, is known across the country for muri (puffed rice), which goes from here to eight districts including Tangail. Shankar Chandra Modak, proprietor of Sotota Murir Mill here, says that in Ramadan they often take orders by mobile phone and supply them, and regular traders from fixed markets also buy from them. He sells muri at Tk 70 a kg, while retail goes up to Tk 80-90; a 50 kg sack of rice yields 43-44 kg of muri. He says that outside Ramadan the muri market falls by half, and more than a hundred families are directly involved in the trade.
