About
Farmer Sumon Ahmed has set up a black soldier fly farm at the Sreemangal municipality waste dumping station in Moulvibazar. He became interested after seeing a YouTube video on his phone, researched the subject, and six months before the report started the farm with just 2 kg of larvae or pupae from the dump on Sreemangal College Road. By the time of the report he had about 300 kg of pupae, and output of larvae, breeder flies and organic fertiliser together had passed 1,000 kg. The larvae, raised on food scraps and rotting waste, are used as protein-rich feed for poultry and fish, and their droppings become organic fertiliser. Retired tea scientist Faruk Ahmed visited the farm and said its fertiliser was of good quality. Sumon says that besides this farm he has another black soldier fly farm in Fenchuganj.
