About
About 20 years ago, to escape hardship, Kalpana Rani took an NGO loan and began making paper packets at home with just Tk 10,000, walking from shop to shop to sell them herself. Her husband Bimal Debnath has been her business partner from the start. Her workshop, 'Swarna Packaging', named after her younger daughter, now runs in a rented house on College Road in Jhalokathi town. It makes paper packets for biryani, sweets and other food in half-kilo, one-kilo, one-and-a-half-kilo and two-kilo sizes, selling for Tk 4 to Tk 13. Packets go to all four upazilas of Jhalokathi and to Barguna and Pirojpur, including shops in Bamna, Betagi, Bhandaria and Naikathi. The workshop has one cutting machine and one roller machine; six women work there directly, five more work from home and three men are employed, and the women earn about Tk 500 a day. Turnover is close to Tk 1 crore. She hopes to buy a modern machine and get a plot in the BSCIC industrial area to expand.
