'Tabla Bhuban' is one of the dhak-making shops on Bazar Road next to Baklar Mor in Barishal city; its proprietor is Sri Shambhu Das. The family has made and repaired the dhak and other instruments for about 50 years, a trade passed down the generations. Before Durga Puja, orders for new drums and repairs come from dhak players and music parties, and the drums go to Dhaka and districts across the division. A 2024 report says a medium dhak costs about Tk 9,000-12,000 to make and sells for Tk 14,000-16,000. The makers say rising prices of wood, leather and other materials have cut their profit.
