About
Tania Traders, Abu Taher's business at Panchapukur bazar in Nilphamari Sadar, makes flower brooms (phul jharu). Drawing on experience at a broom factory in Dhaka, about two years ago he started small, renting a room and making brooms himself alongside a few workers. The workshop has since grown and 15-20 workers now work there regularly. The main material, ulu grass flowers, he brings from Chattogram. Workers bundle the flowers by hand and bind each broom with tape or into a pipe, earning Tk 5-7 per broom; one worker makes at least 100 a day. Each broom sells wholesale for Tk 30, and retail shops sell the same broom for Tk 100. His brooms are found in many markets in the district, and he sells about Tk 6 lakh worth a month.
