Tawhid Mia's Soil-Free Seedling Nursery

Tawhid Mia of Milonpur village in Pirgonj upazila of Rangpur passed SSC in 2007; driven by hardship he worked two years in a sweater factory in Dhaka, returning to his village in December 2013. In May 2014 he took an eight-day course run by a non-government organisation on raising vegetable seedlings without soil. Coconut husk, cow dung and water hyacinth are composted, dried and ground into cocopeat, which fills trays and cups for sowing; seedlings are ready to sell in 20-22 days at 5-6 inches. He began in June 2014 in a 10-decimal shed beside his home and earned Tk 60,000 in three months. He now raises seedlings of chilli, brinjal, bottle gourd, pumpkin, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, ridge gourd, papaya, tomato, cucumber, cauliflower, cabbage and ash gourd on one and a half acres. After costs he earns about Tk 80,000 a month on average, Tk 9 lakh a year, and the nursery employs 18-20 people. Farmers come to the nursery to buy seedlings and to take his advice on farming.
