The Thread Story is an outfit rental shop: nobody comes here to buy clothes, only to rent them. The shop is at House 23, Road 3, Dhanmondi, and there is another branch in Banani that mainly carries western wear. Owner Sumona Sharmin says renting instead of wearing an outfit once and putting it away is more eco-friendly, and not everyone can always afford designer clothes. The shop has outfits by Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Pakistani designers Sana Safinaz, Sania Maskatiya and Agha Noor, as well as Bangladeshi brands such as Anjara, Prem's Collection, Aarong and Khut; even a Sabyasachi lehenga priced at over Tk 12 lakh can be rented. Besides weddings and parties, many people rent saris for university presentations or outings. Rent is usually 15 percent of the outfit's original price, for one to three days; for customers who live far away it can be up to five to seven days, at a somewhat higher rent. Outfits can be booked a month ahead, but the shop needs at least five days' notice. Every returned outfit is dry-washed and given an antibacterial wash before the next customer.
