Five days without internet, and not one order
She sells her own designs through a Facebook page. During the five-day internet shutdown of July 2024 no orders came at all, and the page's reach was broken.
This third-year fashion design student in Dhaka sells clothing she designs herself through a Facebook page, with her mother doing the pattern work. She ships across the country and occasionally abroad. When the internet was shut down for five days in July 2024 she received no orders at all. What went was not only five days of sales: the reach, followers and repeat-buying habit built up over a long time were broken, and she described it as having to start from scratch again. The same report put losses across the sector at a minimum of 60 crore taka a day, at least 300 crore over the five days. Her capital, her usual monthly sales and her own loss are not stated.
Lessons
- 1.An F-commerce page has no fallback channel: when the platform is unreachable, sales go to zero the same day
- 2.The damage outlasts the outage: once a page goes quiet, reach and customer habit have to be rebuilt
