What workedThe founder of a phone repair chain in Dhaka, in a Prothom Alo report

Started because no one could fix his phone; now five branches in Dhaka

Five branches across Dhaka shopping centres and 50-60 technicians, all paid on commission rather than salary. The national phone repair market is put at about 3,000 crore taka.

Back from abroad, this Dhaka entrepreneur could not find anyone able to repair his iPhone — and went into the repair trade himself. His business now has five branches in shopping centres across the city. Between 50 and 60 technicians work with it, paid on commission rather than a fixed salary. Because there is no fixed payroll to carry each month, opening one branch after another was possible. The report puts the national phone repair market at around 3,000 crore taka, and profiles another Dhaka shop owner of more than thirty years who takes 50 percent commission on the day's repairs.

Lessons

  1. 1.A service you yourself could not find is the most direct evidence that the demand is unmet
  2. 2.Paying technicians on commission instead of salary keeps the bad months cheap and makes adding branches possible
