The platform shuts, and a small agent's 22 lakh taka of tickets is stuck
When an online travel agency shut down in August 2025, one small agency was left with 22 lakh taka of tickets bought in advance; a Motijheel police case alleges 4 crore and 79 thousand taka taken from 17 agents.
Flight Expert, an online travel agency that started in March 2017, shut abruptly in August 2025; its managing director messaged an internal WhatsApp group to say he was closing the company and leaving the country. The hardest hit were the small travel agents who had bought tickets from the platform in advance - the chief executive of one Dhaka agency, who described his firm as a very small agent, said they were holding 22 lakh taka of tickets. The agencies expect passengers will get their flights in the end, but whether the agents get their money or tickets back is uncertain, and the liability stays with the small agent, because as he put it, the customer does not know Flight Expert; the customer knows him, and bought the ticket from him. A case filed at Motijheel police station on behalf of 17 travel agents alleges 4 crore and 79 thousand taka taken from those firms, though the complainant said the real figure was in the thousands of crores. Three people were arrested afterwards and the main accused remained at large.
Lessons
- 1.Buying tickets in advance from one platform for the discount puts your entire working capital in a single counterparty's hands
- 2.When the supplier vanishes the liability stays with the small agent: the customer only ever knew him
