What workedA poultry farmer in Mahadevpur, Naogaon, in a Prothom Alo report

300 chicks for 15,000 taka grew into a 40-lakh farm earning 8 lakh a year

He fenced off his own yard and began with 300 chicks bought for 15,000 taka. Seven years on, about 40 lakh taka is tied up in the farm and it earns around 8 lakh a year.

This farmer from Bagdob village in Mahadevpur, Naogaon, worked as a day labourer and at times pulled a rickshaw in Dhaka. Turning to poultry, he fenced off his own yard and began with 300 chicks bought for 15,000 taka. About seven years on the farm holds 2,200 Sonali chickens, 1,300 broilers, 1,220 Khaki Campbell ducks and 765 Peking ducks, with four people employed. Total capital in the farm has reached about 40 lakh taka - 15 lakh into sheds and 25 lakh into chicks and feed. Annual income is now around 8 lakh taka, and he has bought seven bighas of farmland and 15 katha of marketplace land with it. He also told the reporter that the poultry market this year is not very good.

Lessons

  1. 1.Starting inside your own homestead with a few hundred birds keeps the first investment tiny: 15,000 taka was enough to begin
  2. 2.Mixing broilers, Sonali chickens and ducks in one farm spreads the risk when one bird’s market turns bad
