A cloth business run from home in Bera municipality started about five years ago with roughly 40,000 taka; the capital is now over 400,000.

This housewife from Maitribandha in Bera municipality, Pabna, started a cloth business at home about five years ago with roughly 40,000 taka. She sells sarees, three-piece sets, gowns and children's clothing, buying stock at the wholesale cloth market in Shahzadpur, in neighbouring Sirajganj. Because the market is close, travel costs stay low and she can restock in small, frequent lots. Profits went back into stock rather than out of the business, and the capital has grown past 400,000 taka. A neighbour has been running a similar business from her veranda for about two years. Working from home lets her trade while running the household, and Eid brings the strongest sales of the year.
