What workedAn online spice seller in Rangunia, Chattogram, in a Prothom Alo report · Started in 2020

8,000 taka from a clay money box, now a lakh of spices a month

Spices sold online since 2020 on 8,000 taka of savings now bring about 100,000 taka a month, some 40 lakh taka in total sales and more than 500 regular customers - though every parcel has to be carried into Chattogram city because there is no courier locally.

This woman from Gochar village in Rangunia, Chattogram, broke open a clay money box holding 8,000 taka in 2020 and began selling ground chilli, coriander and turmeric online. Selling through Facebook groups she has served around 4,000 customers and built more than 500 regulars across the country - that list is the real asset. Monthly sales now run at about 100,000 taka, with roughly 40 lakh taka sold since she started. Her biggest operating problem is shipping: there is no courier service in her area, so every parcel means a trip into Chattogram city. She won a Joyita Award from the Department of Women's Affairs in 2021 and a business-of-the-year award from an entrepreneurs' group in 2023.
