About the business

A tyre and battery shop works for one reason: both items have to be replaced on a schedule. However carefully a car or a bike is kept, the tyre wears out and the battery one day refuses to turn the engine. Demand is therefore predictable, and that predictability is the biggest advantage this trade has. The customer base is counted too: BRTA records up to May 2026 show 4,980,747 registered motorcycles, 432,114 private cars, 113,914 jeeps, 134,588 microbuses, 172,383 pick-ups and 159,738 trucks. Prices are visible. On 16 September 2026 the Daraz seller Tyre Express BD listed Yokohama car tyres at Tk 11,000 in 175/65R15, Tk 12,000 in 195/65R15 and Tk 21,000 in 225/65R17. Timsun motorcycle tyres ran Tk 1,750 to Tk 15,650, and motorcycle batteries Tk 1,050 to Tk 1,950. The whole trade turns on sizes. Stock the wrong size and the money sits on the shelf; miss the fast-moving size and the customer goes next door - and he only comes to buy a tyre once a year.

What you need to start

  • An air compressor, tyre levers and a puncture kit, a wheel balancing machine, a jack, a battery charger and a hydrometer or battery tester.Equipment
  • Fast-moving tyre and battery sizes. Bike batteries Tk 1,050-1,950 (YTX4L, YTX5L, 12N5A, 12N6.5A, 12N7A); bike tyres Tk 1,750-15,650; car tyres Tk 11,000-29,000 (175/65R15 up to 275/65R17).Starting stock
  • Trade licence from the city corporation or municipality: form Tk 10, licence book Tk 50, standard tax Tk 30, stamp Tk 150-300, licence fee Tk 100-60,000 by trade type, plus VAT and signboard fee. Issued in 3-5 working days.Licence
  • Reading sizes (knowing which vehicle takes 175/65R15 or 90/90-17), judging remaining life from tread wear, and testing a battery to find the real fault - often it is not the battery but the charging system.Skill
  • A brand distributor or the wholesale market. Two terms must be agreed in writing first: whether defective stock is taken back, and who settles a warranty claim.Supplier
  • A roadside shop where a vehicle can pull up, with height for racked tyres and a dry place for batteries.Workspace

How the work is done

  1. 1Decide who you are stocking for: motorcycles only, or cars as well. Bike stock needs far less capital; car tyres multiply it several times over.
  2. 2Find the site: a highway edge, a bus stand, or beside a servicing workshop - wherever people look first when a tyre goes.
  3. 3Take the trade licence from the city corporation or municipality: form Tk 10, book Tk 50, standard tax Tk 30, stamp Tk 150-300 and a fee by trade type, issued in 3-5 working days.
  4. 4Count which sizes actually move in your area first. A few days sitting in a workshop shows you which tyre sizes and which battery models keep coming up.
  5. 5Talk to the brand distributors. Find out four things: their price, their delivery time, whether they take back defective stock, and who honours a warranty claim.
  6. 6Keep the first consignment small but full of the fast-moving sizes. Arrange to order rare sizes in; do not stock them.
  7. 7Be able to fit what you sell: an air compressor, tyre levers, wheel balancing and a battery charger. Sell without fitting and the customer leaves, because he still needs it fitted.
  8. 8Give the battery warranty terms in writing and log the sale date. When a claim comes months later, without paper the loss is yours.
  9. 9Take the old battery back. Scrap lead batteries have their own buyers, and allowing for the trade-in lets you discount the new one - that single practice holds customers.
  10. 10Arrange supply to nearby servicing workshops and rent-a-car operators, but fix the credit limit before you start.

Where it works well

  • Strong fitChattogram · The port city: imported tyres and batteries clear here first, and truck and covered-van demand is heavy.
  • Strong fitCumilla · The main stopping point on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, where long-distance trucks and buses change tyres en route.
  • Strong fitDhaka · The country's largest concentration of cars and motorcycles, and the point from which wholesale supply flows.
  • Strong fitGazipur · The Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and the industrial belt, with both factory pick-ups and workers' bikes.
  • PossibleBogura · The trading centre of the north, where retailers from surrounding districts come to restock.
  • PossibleJashore · A border trade route and transport town with both bike and truck traffic.
  • PossibleNarayanganj · An industrial and transport belt with many pick-ups and covered vans.
  • PossibleRangpur · Heavy motorcycle use, but a small market for car tyres - the shop has to run on bike stock.
  • PossibleSirajganj · Heavy truck traffic on the highway beside the Jamuna bridge gives steady tyre demand.
  • PossibleSylhet · Remittance households own relatively more cars, and the expensive sizes move here.

Risks and cautions

  • HighWorking capital: Nearly all the capital sits in stock, and if the sizes are wrong it does not move. Four each of six fast-moving car tyre sizes alone ties up about Tk 336,000. A rare size can sit for a year, by which time the rubber has hardened. The classic mistake of a new shop is trying to carry every size.
  • HighLate payment: Big customers mean credit. Workshops, rent-a-car operators and truck fleets take four to six tyres at a time but pay at month end or later. A lakh outstanding stops the next consignment, and without the consignment the fast-moving sizes run out - and then the walk-in trade is lost too.
  • MediumDependency: The stock is import-dependent and priced off the dollar. When the distributor raises prices, old stock earns a windfall; when prices fall, the shelf itself is the loss. The brand distributor can change rates unilaterally and a small shop has no bargaining power there.
  • MediumOther: Warranty claims. When a battery dies after six months the customer comes to the shop, and the shopkeeper has to chase the distributor. If the distributor rejects the claim, the money comes out of the shopkeeper's own pocket. Not logging the sale date and terms makes this worse.
