About the business

Cutting, joining, captioning and scoring someone else's footage until it is fit to sell with. Who the customers are is no longer a guess in this country: Pathao Courier lists more than 200,000 online merchants and Steadfast Courier 300,000 registered merchants. Every one of them has a Facebook page and every one of them needs product video. Add the YouTube and Facebook creators who have no time to edit their own material. The two real costs are a computer and time. An editing-capable Core i5 laptop starts at Tk 59,900 at StarTech, or Tk 110,000 with a graphics card. Training is cheap: 10 Minute School's Video Making course is Tk 1,250, and Creative IT Institute charges Tk 15,000 online or Tk 30,000 in person for motion graphics and VFX, while the Department of Youth Development runs a free three-month freelancing course in all 64 districts with a Tk 200 daily allowance. Remember the trade-off: local clients pay less but pay in cash and quickly; overseas clients pay more, but 5 to 8 percent of it disappears into gateway fees and dollar conversion on the way home. From FY2026-27 freelance income is exempt from income tax and from the 15 percent VAT.

How the work is done

  4. 4Buy the computer. A Core i5 13th-generation laptop starts at Tk 59,900; with an RTX 3050 graphics card it is Tk 110,000. Separate storage for footage is also needed.
  5. 5Make three or four samples - one product reel, one YouTube edit, one event clip. Clients do not look at certificates, they look at samples.
  6. 6Go to the merchants registered with couriers. Pathao Courier lists over 200,000 and Steadfast 300,000 - every one of them needs product video.
  7. 7Fix in writing how many revisions a job includes, and take an advance. Without a revision limit a single job can eat a month.
  8. 8For overseas work open a Fiverr or Upwork profile and a Payoneer account - PayPal cannot receive money in Bangladesh.
  9. 9Ask your bank up to what dollar amount it credits without a C-form and whether it can open an ERQ account. With ERQ you can pay Facebook, Google or software fees in dollars directly.
  10. 10Take the ICT Division's free freelancer ID card - it needs at least US$50 earned in the past year - and bring earnings home through the banking channel.

Risks and cautions

  • HighDemand: Entry costs almost nothing, so new editors keep arriving. The Department of Youth Development runs a free three-month freelancing course in all 64 districts, paying Tk 200 a day and three meals; 10 Minute School's Video Making course is Tk 1,250. The price of a plain reel or plain cut never recovers. The ones who survive can do something a three-month course does not teach - motion graphics, or colour work.
  • HighLate payment: Take a job without a revision limit and the client sends the same video back again and again while the money sits. Small Facebook sellers are themselves waiting on couriers for cash-on-delivery money, so you are paid only after they are. Starting without an advance puts all of that risk on you.
  • MediumDependency: The clients' whole business stands on Facebook. If Facebook goes down or ad rules change, online sellers' sales drop and video is the first cost they cut. The Ministry of Commerce's draft cross-border digital trade policy of 25 July 2026 says foreign firms such as Meta and Google cannot run digital advertising in Bangladesh without DBID registration - and how the clients will advertise if that takes effect is still unclear.
  • MediumWorking capital: The computer is nearly the whole capital and it must be bought first - a Core i5 laptop from Tk 59,900, or Tk 110,000 with a graphics card - whether or not work comes. On overseas jobs another 5-8 percent is lost to gateways and conversion, and if that is not priced in from the start the sums will not add up.
  • LowCompliance: Bangladesh Bank has stated that holding earnings abroad or in cryptocurrency outside an approved account breaches the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947 and is punishable. From FY2026-27 this income is exempt from both tax and VAT, so there is no longer any argument for leaving money outside.
