Abdullah's ornamental fish hatchery

Abdullah (22), a madrasa student from Magurkhali village in Keshabpur upazila, Jashore, farms ornamental fish commercially in 60 cement tanks beside his courtyard and in a netted pond. Eight years ago, taken with the coloured fish in a friend's aquarium, he bought two fish for Tk 40 and kept them in a jar; he has farmed commercially for four years and has built up capital of about Tk 30 lakh. The hatchery has about 30 kinds, including fighter fish, goldfish, comet, koi carp, guppy, short-tail molly, angelfish, orange molly, black molly and white molly. The tanks have algae and constant aeration; the fish eat bought feed and live tubifex worms he cultures himself. He sells both retail and wholesale for aquariums; traders order by phone, the fish are sent by long-distance bus and payment comes by bKash. His fish go regularly to Jashore, Satkhira, Dhaka, Rajshahi and Chattogram, with buyers among aquarium traders at Katabon in Dhaka and Farazipara in Khulna. His parents and brother help in the hatchery, and the upazila fisheries office advises him regularly.
