About
Abdur Rahim of Manoharpur village in Manirampur upazila, Jashore, makes vermicompost on 40 decimals of leased land next to Manoharpur Kachharibari Bazar. After a master's degree and 18 years at Grameen Bank, he took voluntary retirement and in 2011 bought 100 earthworms for just Tk 100 and began making compost in a single clay tub. Five workers now work at his project regularly, producing 20 tonnes a month, or 240 tonnes of organic fertiliser and earthworms a year. Annual sales are Tk 12 to 14 lakh, with a profit of Tk 5 to 6 lakh after all costs. Cow dung collected from households is left in the open for a month to release gas, then spread in 7–8 inch beds under a tin shed where the worms are released. Besides local farmers, he sells wholesale to farmers and fertiliser traders in Jashore, Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat. Since last year he has been packing and branding the compost; many locals have taken up vermicompost after seeing his work.
