About
Anowara Begum (50), wife of Abdul Khan of Barbakpur village in Jhikargacha upazila, Jashore, is a farmer and community organiser and was named an upazila-level Joyita in 2023. In early 2016 the local sub-assistant agriculture officer, Ayub Hossain, bought her 100 grams of earthworms for Tk 150; today her unit makes 27-30 maunds of organic fertiliser a month, and many in the village have taken up vermicomposting after her. On about a bigha of fenced land beside her house she grows chemical-free vegetables and keeps cattle and poultry, including Campbell ducks on a commercial basis. She trains chui jhal vines up the mango, jam, litchi, bael, malta and other fruit trees around her home and sells Tk 2,000-4,000 of chui jhal cuttings a year. On her husband's seven bigha she uses her own vermicompost and heap compost, and makes herbal pest remedies instead of pesticide.
