Abdur Rahman's Integrated Farm and Hatchery

Abdur Rahman, a young man from Binoyekpur village in Somudoykathi union of Nesarabad upazila, Pirojpur, could not find a job after finishing his studies and built an integrated farm of ducks, chickens, pigeons, cattle and goats at his own home. He had kept chickens since his student days; starting with a few local hens, he added cattle, goats and pigeons as the profits came. After watching YouTube videos on incubator hatching, he bought an incubator for Tk 30,000; his first trial with 280 eggs had about 60 percent success. Now his incubator hatches 1,000 to 1,200 ducklings and chicks every month and a half; he buys eggs at Tk 8-10 and hatches them himself, while a chick costs Tk 50-60 in the market. The farm has a small herd of local cattle, goats, more than 200 pigeons, duck and chicken sheds and a separate incubator room; one employee looks after it regularly. Hatching earns him Tk 15,000-20,000 a month and the whole farm Tk 25,000-30,000 a month; the venture, begun with a few thousand taka, now has capital of over Tk 10 lakh. He wants to expand the farm and teach educated unemployed young people in the village the work.
