Md. Abdur Rashid, originally from Morrelganj in Bagerhat, has sold chola (spiced chickpeas) from his bicycle around Khulna city for about 16 years. He came to Khulna looking for work about 22 years ago, pulled a rickshaw and worked as a night guard, then learned to cook chola from a man in the Boikali area and started this trade. His chickpeas, cooked with chui jhal, potato and whole garlic, are kept warm in an aluminium pot hung on the bicycle over a small clay stove, and served with chopped cucumber and spices. He cooks at midday and in the afternoon rides from Nur Nagar past New Market and Power House Mor to the BIWTA No. 4 ghat area, moving to the Boro Bazar area when trade is slow. He sells 2-2.5 kg of chola on ordinary days and up to 4 kg on Fridays, usually sold out by 9 pm, making a profit of about Tk 300-400 a day.
