About
Abdus Salam, son of Alhaj Abdul Baser of Dwipnagar village in Dharmapur union, Birol upazila of Dinajpur, planted an orchard of 600 apple kul (jujube) seedlings on about 6 acres in South Meragaon village about seven years ago. Two workers look after the orchard full time, with extra hands for irrigation and weeding; irrigation and care cost about Tk 2 lakh a year. In the first year he sold about Tk 3 lakh worth of kul, and the next year, once the trees flowered, he sold the crop under contract for about Tk 6 lakh. He planted lombu timber trees around the orchard and earned about Tk 5 lakh from them after five years, and lemon plants in place of a fence bring extra income. When the kul ripens, traders buy it by the maund at the orchard and take it through Dinajpur and nearby districts to Dhaka. Following his example, another 21 acres of commercial kul orchards have been planted in the upazila.
