About
Abu Jafar Mollah (54) of Darga Maria village in Bhabaniganj municipality, Bagmara upazila, Rajshahi, is a honey hunter who has cycled through woods and jungles since 2001 searching for wild hives. He began as an assistant to Abdus Sattar, a honey hunter from the same village, and went independent after learning the craft. He smokes the bees away with burning straw and takes honey straight from the comb, taking care not to kill the bees. With his assistant Joynal Abedin he searches Bagmara, Durgapur, Puthia, Manda, Atrai and Raninagar for hives, and sells the honey door to door. In peak season he can collect about Tk 75,000 worth of honey a month; work almost stops in the monsoon. The honey comes from mustard, mango, lychee, sesame, jujube and other wild flowers. Because it is unadulterated, regular buyers pay more for his honey; one teacher has bought from him for 11 years.
