About
In Chunati Sufi Nagar Baganpara, Lohagara upazila, Chattogram, returnee migrant Abu Siddique (55) runs a banana garden. He went to Saudi Arabia in 2017 but illness kept him out of work; back home in 2024 with no land of his own, he rented one acre of abandoned land for Tk 6,000 a year. On the agriculture officer's advice he planted 320 Meher Sagar banana suckers, bought at Tk 40 each, in June 2024. He began selling ten months after planting; in seven months he sold Tk 2.5 lakh of bananas at about Tk 500 a bunch, and now earns Tk 30,000–40,000 a month after costs from bananas and suckers. Traders from local markets collect the fruit from the garden. Encouraged, he has planted another 600 banana plants on 2 bigha nearby. The upazila agriculture office supports him with fertiliser and cash incentives.
