About
Abul Kalam Azad, a farmer in the Lalmai hills area of Cumilla, used to be a distributor for several companies; to escape the pressure he began growing lemons on his family's fallow hill land and sold Tk 5 lakh of China Lemon-03 in the first year. He then added malta, selling 5 tonnes in a year, and has grown taro (kochur chhora) for eight years. In the Rupbanmura area he grows banana, lemon, malta, pineapple, mango, cassava and papaya, and taro at Madinanagar; he has newly planted dragon fruit, cashew and coffee. Ten workers work regularly and 15 more in harvest season, and he works alongside them. The upazila agriculture officer says he made a profit of about Tk 35 lakh from farm produce in 2022; he supplies fruit and crops to local markets.
