Ahsan Islam Shahin, from Arappur in Jhenaidah town, has built a small farmhouse on 43 decimals beside the Nabaganga river at Jargram, Kumrabaria union, Jhenaidah Sadar, where he lives alone. After studying electrical and electronic engineering he worked in Dhaka, then left the job to follow his love of farming. The farm grows sugarcane, mango, lemon, guava, papaya, vegetables and many medicinal and flowering plants. Learning on YouTube that date-seed coffee is popular in the Middle East, he began making a drink from the seeds of local dates, which usually lie wasted under the trees: village boys gather the bunches, he separates the seeds, washes and sun-dries them, roasts them crisp in a pan of sand and grinds them in a blender into a powder drunk like coffee. He also makes gur from the fleshy part of the dates. Local people say visitors come from far away every day to taste the drink, and some come to learn how to make it.
