About
Akkhoy Kumar Mondal, of Deol village in Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira, used to live off farming his inherited 25 decimals and day labour; because the saltwater Chuna canal runs past his land, it gave only one crop a year. Inspired by Monotosh Mondal of neighbouring Hatchala, about ten years ago he dug a pond on 7 decimals to hold fresh water and began growing bitter gourd (korola), okra, cabbage/cauliflower and green chilli on the other 18 decimals. He later bought 16 more decimals next door and grows vegetables there too. In 8–10 years he has built a cowshed and bought four cows, built a brick house and opened a fertiliser and pesticide shop. Vegetables from these three villages now go daily to the Dhaka and Chattogram markets as well.
