About
At Garbhanga Bazar in Keshabpur, Jashore, the couple Md. Alauddin and Johra Begum run a chop (fritter) shop where the chops are made from vegetables instead of potato. They opened the shop to ease their hardship; Johra Begum started with bottle-gourd chops and then added tomato, bean, Malabar spinach, banana-flower and garlic chops one by one. Preparation starts in the morning, and everything they make each day sells out, with some customers going home empty-handed. Demand peaks at iftar time, and people come from well beyond the area to buy. Alauddin used to work on farms but cannot do field work after two strokes, so the couple run the shop together. They buy oil, gram flour and other supplies on credit and repay from sales, keeping a profit of Tk 400 to 500 a day.
