About
Alpana Khatun and her sister-in-law Shilpi Khatun of Nagpara village, Bagmara upazila, Rajshahi, grow mushrooms at home as equal partners; both their husbands live abroad. Around 2022 they learned the method from YouTube on smartphones bought to talk to their husbands, and set up 350 mushroom cylinders in a mud room beside their house, buying inputs from Bogura. Mushrooms are ready for sale in 30-34 days; fresh mushrooms sell at Tk 300 and dried at Tk 2,000 a kg, and they deliver dried mushrooms to a few regular buyers. By their account, one round costs Tk 14,000-15,000 and brings in Tk 1.05 lakh; growing stops for three months in the hot season. The upazila agriculture officer calls them Bagmara's first and only mushroom growers, and their stall won a prize at the upazila agriculture fair.
