About
Ananda Confectionery at Satrawza on Nazimuddin Road, Old Dhaka, is one of the city's oldest bakeries, running for 112 years. Sheikh Chan Mia from Boalmari, Faridpur, learned baking at a British bakery at Northbrook Hall and started the business; his son Tara Mia took over, and now his grandsons are the bakers and supervisors, led by Siddiqur Rahman. The factory is behind the shop and makes meat loaf, chicken patties, samosas, laddu, breads, biscuits, hot dogs and chanachur. At Shab-e-Barat it makes breads shaped like crocodiles, turtles and fish, and hand-made halwa. Baking is now in a gas oven. There is no seating; food is bought to take away. A branch opened in Kurmitola in 1990.
