Anju Majumdar's Vermicompost

Anju Majumdar (50), a farmer in Majumdarpara, Sukhchhari village, Amirabad union, Lohagara upazila, Chattogram, began making vermicompost in 2017 on the union agriculture officer's advice, with 250 g of earthworms from the agriculture office. She now has 5 kg of worms and four compost chambers, and produces 500 kg of compost every six weeks from the dung of her two cows. After using it on the family's two mixed vegetable and fruit gardens, she sells the surplus; locally compost sells at Tk 12 a kg and worms at Tk 1,000–1,500 a kg. She says her family of five once struggled financially and is now comfortable. In 2020 the upazila agriculture office declared Sukhchhari a 'vermicompost village'.
