About
Usha Bala Nath, a homemaker in Dilip Mistri Para of Rangapani village, about 10 km from Bibirhat Bazar in Fatikchhari upazila, Chattogram, began producing vermicompost in 2020 on the advice of local agriculture officers. In a fenced, tin-roofed shed in a corner of her yard she keeps 15 cement rings, feeding earthworms two parts cow dung to one part vegetable waste, and has a sieve to separate the compost. The compost sells at Tk 10–12 a kg, and for two years she has earned Tk 60,000–70,000 a year on average. With this income she built two concrete toilets, bought ducks and chickens and helped pay for her son to go abroad. Bagged compost is stacked by the road and loaded onto vehicles when buyers come. Other women in the neighbourhood followed her lead; Fatikchhari compost goes to Rangamati, Feni, Boalkhali, Raozan and elsewhere.
