About
To escape poverty, Apurba Biswas (48) and Lipika Haldar (38) of Raghunathpur Purba-Dakshinpara village, Gopalganj Sadar, dug a gher (pond-field) on their own three acres: fish in the monsoon, boro rice in the dry season. Since 2008 they have grown tomatoes on the gher's 60 decimals of banks, plus bitter gourd, cucumber, bottle gourd, pumpkin and other vegetables all year. In the 2022 season they planted 4,200 hybrid Beauty and Bipul Plus tomato plants on the banks, at a cost of about Tk 50,000. Selling the early Beauty tomatoes at Tk 120 a kg at first and Tk 55 later, they earned Tk 1.15 lakh in a month and hoped for Tk 3 lakh more over the next three months. The agriculture officer estimates at least 21 tonnes this season at 5 kg a plant. The income pays for their son Arpan's and daughter Arpita's schooling, and at least 25 couples in the village now grow vegetables after their example.
