About
Arifur Rahman, a young man from Jangalpur village in Burichang upazila, Cumilla, started collecting juice from date palms left neglected on field ridges after returning from Dubai. His father, a farmer, used to collect date juice in winter and Arifur helped him. Besides his own 13 trees he leases 40 more for Tk 8,000 a year and keeps one helper on contract. He taps 26 trees one day and 27 the next, about five litres per tree on average. The work runs through the Bangla months of Agrahayan, Poush and Magh; he sells the juice at Tk 80 per kg, the whole day's juice sells out, and larger amounts need an advance order. From a capital of just Tk 8,000 he earns over Tk 10,000 a day; liquid jaggery (jhola gur) made by boiling the juice is also sold. Buyers come from as far as 8 km away for fresh juice.
