About
About ten years ago Asma Akter (50), a homemaker in Moddhobhag, Adampur union of Kamolganj, set out to beat her family's hardship by learning to weave saris on a Manipuri loom from Bilkis Begum in nearby Bongaon village. She bought a Manipuri loom for Tk 6,000 and set it up at home, weaving two pieces a week at first. Loom by loom she grew to five, with 10 women working under her and five to seven saris made a week. She now has 18 looms at home and in other places. She buys yarn at Adampur bazar, and wholesalers collect the finished saris from her house. Many local women come to her to learn weaving and she trains those who are interested. She earns about Tk 50,000 a month, which put a daughter and a son through their degrees; another son is studying medicine.
